Kayak registration questions
Nine questions paddlers ask before a trip, answered from the state agencies’ own pages.
Do I have to register a kayak?
It depends on the state. Ohio registers canoes and kayaks. Minnesota registers non-motorized boats longer than 10 feet and Iowa those longer than 13 feet. Texas, New York, Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois do not register boats that are only paddled.
Do I need to register a kayak with a trolling motor?
Yes, in nearly every state. A motor of any kind makes the boat a motorboat. Texas, New York, Illinois and Wisconsin say so explicitly; Washington exempts boats under 16 feet with 10 horsepower or less on non-federal waters only.
Does a stand-up paddleboard need to be registered?
Mostly not, but states differ. Ohio does not register paddleboards. Minnesota registers them when they are longer than 10 feet. Wyoming exempts paddleboards from its invasive species decal.
I am visiting another state. Do its rules apply to my kayak?
Often with a grace period. Ohio accepts a boat registered at home for up to 60 days, Minnesota exempts visitors for up to 90 consecutive days if their home state does not license that craft. Permits such as Oregon’s Waterway Access Permit apply to visitors from the first day.
What is Oregon’s Waterway Access Permit?
A permit required for all non-motorized boats in Oregon regardless of length, for operators aged 14 and older. The Marine Board lists $6 for seven days, $20 for a year and $35 for two years, plus a portal fee. It can be moved between boats.
Is an inflatable kayak treated differently?
For registration, usually not — Iowa’s 13-foot exemption explicitly includes inflatable canoes and kayaks. For invasive species permits it can be: Idaho exempts inflatable non-motorized craft under 10 feet, Wyoming those 10 feet or less.
Do I have to wear a life jacket in a kayak?
You must always carry one per person. Children must wear theirs — under 13 by federal rule, with slightly different ages in some states. New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Connecticut require everyone to wear one during the cold season.
Does Pennsylvania require kayak registration?
Not as such. But to launch at a Fish and Boat Commission access or at a state park or state forest access, an unpowered boat must be registered or display a launch permit.
Where does the registration number go?
On both sides of the bow, with the validation decal next to it. Your state’s registration papers show the exact layout and spacing.
