About this guide
Written for paddlers, from official sources, with nothing to sell.
Who is behind this
Kayak Registration by State is an independent editorial project published by Atelier Jerz. We explain what paddlers in the United States need before they put a kayak, canoe or paddleboard on the water. We have no connection to any state agency, boat maker or outfitter.
No sales, no rankings
This site does not sell boats, gear, permits or courses and carries no affiliate links. When we mention what a permit costs, the figure comes from the agency that issues it, and the only place to get one is that agency.
How the facts are checked
- Agency pages first. Every rule comes from the website of the state boating agency, the motor-vehicle office or the U.S. Coast Guard.
- Linked and dated. Each rule carries a link to its source, and each page says when it was checked — currently October 2026.
- Gaps stay visible. Where an agency’s page does not answer a question — paddleboards are a frequent example — we say so and suggest asking the agency.
- Fees with caution. Fees are quoted as published and may change with a new season.
